While egg quality and sperm health play vital roles in successful in vitro fertilization (IVF), so does the uterine cavity. Because undetected issues inside the uterus can cause implantation failure, a hysteroscopy is a standard part of the pre-cycle evaluation before you begin IVF.
At Effortless IVF™ in Fort Worth and Bedford, Texas, infertility specialists Kevin Doody, MD, and Kathleen Doody, MD, developed Effortless IVF™ to reduce barriers to traditional IVF.
Before beginning the IVF process, hysteroscopy provides a simple and effective way to look inside the uterus and check for potential issues before implantation.
Hysteroscopy is a quick, minimally invasive procedure that allows your doctor to look directly inside your uterus. Instead of relying solely on imaging scans, our team inserts a thin, lighted telescope called a hysteroscope through your cervix.
This provides a high-definition view of the uterine cavity on a monitor. The test takes only a few minutes in our office, requires no incisions, and allows most patients to get right back to their regular routines quickly.
If you’re under 35, you’ll need to have a hysteroscopy within 12 months of starting IVF; if you’re 35 or older, you’ll need to have the test within six months of IVF treatment. If you’ve completed this test recently with another provider, we can review those records during your initial consultation.
The innovative Effortless IVF™ process utilizes the INVOcell® device to handle early fertilization inside your body, but the ultimate goal is a successful embryo transfer into your uterus.
Since a compromised uterine environment can prevent successful implantation, pre-cycle evaluation for IVF always involves hysteroscopy testing. This test can help detect:
In cases of recurrent implantation failure or recurrent miscarriage, hysteroscopy can also pinpoint or rule out structural causes and other potential issues.
Because our team can directly view the uterine cavity, hysteroscopy is effective for helping us identify abnormalities that other diagnostic methods may miss.
In many situations, the test serves both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. If our team discovers a small polyp, scar tissue, or certain other issues during the procedure, for example, we may be able to remove or correct it at the same time.
This approach can reduce the need for additional procedures while helping create a healthier environment for embryo implantation and pregnancy.
Knowing that your uterus is healthy removes a major variable from the IVF equation. It allows our team to move forward with greater confidence and gives you one less thing to worry about during an already emotionally demanding process.
On the other hand, if the procedure does reveal an abnormality, identifying it early means our team can address it before your first (or next) embryo transfer.
Most patients return to normal activities the same day or within a day or two. Mild cramping or light spotting may occur after the procedure, but significant discomfort is uncommon.
We review our findings with you and explain the recommended next steps. Depending on the results, next steps may include fertility treatments, IVF planning, or additional evaluation.
A hysteroscopy test plays a valuable role in the preparation phase of IVF, especially when you’re facing unexplained infertility.
