Lupron® vs. hCG Trigger in Effortless IVF™: Your Questions, Answered
Choosing the right trigger shot for ovulation is a crucial decision that can impact egg maturity as well as retrieval timing. With Effortless IVF™, knowing the difference between Lupron® and hCG triggers helps you make the best choice for you.

With the in vitro fertilization (IVF) process, the trigger shot is timed to stimulate the final maturation of eggs before retrieval. It also helps schedule the exact window for the procedure. Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) has long served as the go-to option in traditional IVF.

However, Lupron®, a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist, is now more commonly used in certain protocols, especially when aiming to minimize the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS).

At Effortless IVF™ in Fort Worth and Bedford, Texas, Dr. Kevin Doody and Dr. Kathleen Doody tailor your IVF treatment to your individual hormone profile, ovarian response, and safety considerations. Choosing between Lupron and hCG is a strategic decision guided by your full clinical picture. Here’s what you should know.

How Lupron and hCG work differently

Both Lupron and hCG mimic the natural luteinizing hormone (LH) surge that prompts ovulation. But they do it through different mechanisms.

HCG acts directly on the ovaries, prompting egg maturation. However, its longer half-life (up to six days) can overstimulate the ovaries, increasing the risk of OHSS. This is especially true in patients with a high follicle count.

Lupron, by contrast, stimulates your pituitary gland to release your body’s own LH and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) for a more physiologic ovulatory response. The surge it creates is shorter and often safer, particularly for patients with a higher ovarian reserve or polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).

Why Lupron is often used in Effortless IVF™

Kevin Doody, MD, and Kathleen Doody, MD, created Effortless IVF™, a simplified IVF protocol that prioritizes safety and success. In many cases, Lupron is the preferred trigger due to:

  • Lower risk of OHSS
  • Precise control of timing
  • Minimal hormonal load post-retrieval

This aligns with the Effortless IVF™ commitment to making fertility care safer, less stressful, and more affordable.

When hCG might still be the right choice

In some cases, Lupron alone may not provide enough support for the luteal phase (the time after egg retrieval). If your body isn’t producing enough LH naturally, or if your pituitary has been suppressed during treatment, hCG, or a dual trigger combining Lupron and a low dose of hCG might be recommended.

Our fertility team may also choose hCG if you have a history of lower ovarian response or if your labs suggest Lupron might not be sufficient to complete egg maturation. At Effortless IVF™, this decision is made carefully, based on your hormone levels, follicular development, and previous cycles (if applicable).
